B Vitamins: Why You Need Them

The human body needs 13 different vitamins to survive and thrive, and the B-group of vitamins account for eight of those 13 vitamins. Commonly known as the vitamin B complex, the B vitamins include B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9 and B12 and all of them hold a number of benefits for the body

B vitamins are essential to vitality, especially when it comes to nervous, brain, and cardiovascular system function. They also regulate energy production and healthy red blood cell formation and function. B vitamins don’t directly give you energy, but instead, they help your body use protein, fats, and carbohydrates efficiently as fuel, which occurs during digestion and absorption.

Though they’re naturally found in food, because they’re water-soluble, most B vitamins are excreted more quickly from the body than vitamins that are fat-soluble. The only exceptions to this rule are Vitamin B-12 and folate, which are stored in the liver.

According to a US study, 40% of people following a typical western diet are vitamin B complex deficient. Here are the symptoms to look out for:

  • Anaemia (low red blood cell count) leading to tiredness and fatigue, breathlessness, headaches, dizziness, pale skin and lack of appetite
  • Constipation, diarrhea, loss of appetite, or gas
  • Sore tongue and mouth ulcers
  • Mental problems like depression, memory loss, or behavioral changes
  • Loss of vision
  • Nerve problems like numbness or tingling, muscle weakness, and problems walking
  • Skin disorders, such as irritation or a rash
  • Increased risk of infections

If you suspect that you have a deficiency, supplement daily with a good quality Vitamin B Complex.
